Vapor Recovery Technology
R.A.
Nichols Engineering Vapor Recovery Systems are designed to be cost
efficient and are guaranteed to meet 10mg/l. Our Vapor Recovery
Systems consist of a Vapor Recovery Unit, Burner and Vapor Holder.
We also manufacture and/or design online and specialty Vapor Burners,
Equalizers, and Vapor Holders. We also offer Portable Burner Systems and a line
of Burner Booster Systems. RANE engineers each system, combining these
components to form systems with minimum capital cost, maintenance, and operating
cost, while maximizing vapor recovery efficiency and return on investment.
R. A. Nichols Engineering is pleased to provide you with information
about our Vapor Recovery Technology.

Vapor
Recovery Units
-
R.A. Nichols Engineering offers
Absorption Vapor Recovery
Units, which are designed to minimize maintenance and operation costs. We
designed these units to operate with a Vapor Holder and they utilize a burner on the outlet to maximize system efficiency.
A 300cfm unit with a larger Vapor Holder and Burner can handle thruputs of
greater than 1.5M gal/day, while maintaining outlet emissions to less than
0.5% of inlet vapor volume, less than 5 mg/l, and/or 99+% efficiency. In most cases we suggest our
Single-Stage VR Unit, which has a typical
recovery efficiency of 83% of saturated inlet gasoline vapor, (35% vapor, 1.61
gal/1000gal). In larger terminals with thruputs greater than 1.5M gal/day, and high vapor
concentrations, the system can pay for itself in less than two years. In
cases where very high thru-put and high vapor concentrations make it cost
effective, we utilize our Two-Stage VR Unit. R.A.
Nichols Engineering Two-Stage VR Unit has a
recovery efficiency of 93% of saturated inlet gasoline vapor. 2-Stage units are more complicated than the 1-Stage unit, but still much simpler
than carbon and refrigeration units. The advantages of increased efficiency are often
outweighed by added capital cost, simplicity and decreased operating and maintenance costs
of the 1-Stage VR Unit.

Vapor Burners
-
R.A. Nichols Engineering Vapor
Burners are guaranteed to meet 10mg/l
efficiency
with no assist gas or time at temperature requirements. RANE Burners utilize Maxon line burner
technology and NFPA commercial burner safety guidelines to produce cost effective vapor
burners for the oil and gas industry. Working with both petroleum and digester gas
industry, R.A. Nichols has perfected both natural and forced convection burners from 4 to
120 million btuh. R.A. Nichols Engineering has built both
Stationary and Portable
burners.

Portable
Combustion System
The RANE
Trailer Mounted Portable Combustion System is the largest and most cost
efficient portable combustion system in existence
and is guaranteed to meet 10mg/l
efficiency
with no assist gas or time at temperature requirements.
Able to process up to 13 arms at 600gpm and as little as 1 arm at 600 gpm,
while maintaining stability. In many terminals, the system will be able to
even provide its own pilot fuel. This unit can be set up for operation by one
man, in approximately 2 hours. The latest
portable burner uses Equalizer / variable speed blower technology to produce a
1,100 cfm terminal burner system which tested at 2 mg/l without use of
external fuel gas.

Vapor Holder
The
R.A. Nichols Engineering Vapor Holder is a cylindrical, self-supporting roof, steel tank
with a vapor bladder. The proprietary R.A.
Nichols Ring design provides a stable, roughly linear vapor volume versus ring position. Ring bladders have over twice the measurable
volume of hemispherical and non-ring designs. The
effectiveness of vapor holders has led four major oil distributors to retrofit R.A.
Nichols Vapor Holders to their condensation and charcoal systems. The vapor holder cuts
operating time for online refrigeration and carbon systems and therefore cuts operating
and maintenance costs.

Equalizer
The Equalizer is typically a horizontal fuel tank
that serves as a detonation arrestor and fuel conditioner. This simple
system can increase the capacity of both Carbon Systems and Combustion
Systems. If the Equalizer is properly located, the tank can be used as a drain
tank for the rack and Vapor Recovery System.

Burner Booster System
The RANE Vapor
Burner Booster System utilizes an Equalizer and a Vapor Blower system. The Equalizer
insures burnable fuel concentrations and the vapor blower produces enough flow on start-up
that the burner will lite and enough flow is maintained to the burner
to insure a stable flame. The Equalizer portion of the system stabilizes the vapor
concentration going to the burner at a level somewhat below the rack average vapor
concentration, which extends the current capacity of a systems burner. Using this technology
and a Vapor Holder several standard burners have
qualified for fuel gas exemptions in the South Coast AQMD.
